How to Tell When You Need a New Oven

All appliances have a lifespan. Even if you have been taking good care of your oven all of these years, your oven will gradually show signs of wear and tear.

You might be able to extend the life of home appliances like dishwasher, washing machine, microwave oven and fridges freezers with a few repairs, but eventually, your oven will reach a point when it is no longer economically feasible to repair it because it has too many problems. The time will come when you should replace your oven with a new one.

With that said, what signs will tell you that you need a new oven? Here are some of the most common problems that you should look for.

1. Rust in the Oven

Just open your oven door and look around inside. If you see rust, this is a good indicator that the oven should be replaced.

Rust forms from corroded metal. It makes your oven work less efficiently. Not only that, but rust makes your oven an unhealthy cooking environment because it can contaminate the food that you are cooking and make you ill. Pieces of rust can fall into your food and cause a choking hazard.

2. The Glass Oven Door is Cracked

If there is a crack in your glass oven door, consider replacing your oven. A cracked oven door allows heat to escape during cooking. Your oven will have a harder time maintaining the proper cooking temperature. In addition, it will force your oven to use more electricity to maintain the cooking temperature, which means a higher energy bill. Instead of paying more for energy, why not get a new oven?

3. Repair Costs are Increasing

If your oven is not working properly, it is natural that your first inclination is to repair it. However, if you have already repaired it several times in the past, it is a sign that you should replace it.

When you add up all of the past repair costs and factor in an estimate of future repairs, the total cost is properly close to the price of a new oven.

4. Controls Often Malfunction

Your oven has all kinds of dials and control buttons that operate different functions. If you find yourself having to manually light your oven all the time because the controls are not working properly, it wastes your time and compromises your safety.

It is also not easy to replace just one control switch or button. If the controls are unreliable and are causing frequent problems during your meal preparation, consider getting a new oven.

5. The Grease Build-up is Impossible to Clean

Oven-cleaning is a labour-intensive task because of all the grime and grease built up from cooking. Using your oven everyday for the past many years can cause a stubborn build-up of dirt that is impossible to remove. Layers of grease also increase the risk of an oven fire. A new oven will eliminate that problem and give you better peace of mind.

6. It’s Just the Right Time for Something New

Perhaps there is nothing physically wrong with your oven, but you just want something new. Your old oven has been a workhorse, and you have prepared hundreds of delicious meals on it. However, you want a change. A new oven with a different style or more features can make cooking fun and exciting once again. That is a good reason for an upgrade.
